Welcome to Del Obispo Elementary School

Next Generation Learning Academy

Summer 2018

Welcome to Del Obispo, Next Generation Learning Academy! Thank you for visiting our Web Site!

I am so excited to see what the 2018 – 2019 school year has to offer students as we continue to refine our S.T.E.A.M. centered educational programs. Del Obispo is a CapoForward school offering students the opportunities to build their interests and talents in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. With the need for students to build 21st century skills like collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication skills, while emphasizing reading, writing and literacy - Del Obispo has a cutting edge educational environment where student engagement is at the core.

This past year we experienced much success as we launched five Pathway S.T.E.M Labs for ours students. The Culinary Creation lab is a student favorite where students work with their teachers to learn about sustainability, “farm to table” traditions and explore concepts of chemistry in a lab where taste leads the senses. In the Maker Space – it’s all about engineering. Students get to build models and test out their theories of action using recycled materials and tools. In our Discovery Science lab – students get to explore science with our state of the art microscopes. The hands on learning that students get in our Discovery lab make the Next Generation Science Standards come alive. Our Outdoor Science Center and Garden is where we study botany, biology, weather, conservation, geology and more. When you’re learning through growing plants in you school garden – thinking like a scientist becomes second nature. And finally, our Robotics Lab allows students the opportunity to use robotic systems like Lego, Spheros and Vex to solve 21st century problems today.  And as part of our continued commitment to S.T.E.A.M. we will be having the Meet the Masters visual arts program sponsored by our amazing PTA and will continue weekly music instruction for all students in grades K – 5.

We are very  proud to offer every student coding instruction in grades k – 5. Every week we have a resident coding teacher who comes and teaches all of our students how to code using Scratch from M.I.T. During these coding lessons, students are engaged, not in playing video games, but creating them. Students learn necessary computer science skills while exploring academic content. Our partnership with Code Campus helps make Del Obispo unique – allowing students to explore their interests in computer science at school, on a weekly basis.

At Del Obispo, we provide all students with a positive learning environment. Our staff and families believe that being kind starts when you feel connected. With a counselor on site, clear school-wide routines and procedures and engaging curriculum, our Dragons are kind and friendly. We work on team building every week at our Town Hall Tuesday Celebrations where we come together to celebrate students, community and staff. Coffee with the principal on the last Tuesday of the month at 8:00AM is an opportunity to see students in action as each grade demonstrates their learning throughout the year. Our Books and Blankets Picnic is a hit with parents and kids as we foster a community of literacy and get together once a tri-mester to share books and enjoy lunch on the lawn.
